Ascension Day service had 15 in the choir and 15 in the congregation - quiet and peaceful. What a contrast on Sunday morning - packed church and extra large choir (we were joined by the local prep school choir of 20 boys - plus their boarders in the congregation). It is easy to forget these people are also worshipping in our town on a Sunday morning, as they usually do so hidden away in their little school chapel, away from state interference! Reminiscent of long ago, when choirs were mainly boy trebles...... Anthem was 'Ave Verum' (Elgar), so a lot more welly on the top line today. In addition to the usual drama, one of the acolytes fainted, banged her head on the stone floor and had to be carted off to hospital. This sub-drama was played out very discreetly - I didn't even notice the ambulancemen making their departure, obviously being a good little chorister I had my eyes on the conductor the whole time ;)
Shortened evensong today - no sermon, as the vicar was on a jolly to another local boarding school (obviously today is Independence Day) - I rather like these quiet, low-key evening services, so don't come to church, you might fill the place up too much! Anthem tonight was 'Through the day thy love has spared us' by Philip Moore (lovely ditty, unusual rhythms).
