Holy Cross Sunday

Felt I'd been transported back to Good Friday this morning (oh good that means I get to have this wonderful summer all over again) or maybe I missed Christmas all together, and ended up at next Good Friday. Still, a good chance to sing all those traditional 'death on the cross' hymns, and the anthem 'were you there when they crucified my Lord', (Morgan the Organ) with doubled-up parts except for one 4-part harmony verse.

One tenor was in Russia - singing with the school choir - but another came to take his place: an old boy on holiday in the area. So thus the choir lives to impose itself on the congregation for another day....

No evensong tonight, so went to a local church which had just been reopened after 3 years (!!!) being refurbished. It is hard to imagine being without your church for 3 years. It was rededicated by the Bishop of Plymouth, who also preached and, being their harvest service, we sang the good old traditional harvest hymns, with as many long verses as possible. To end, we sang 'Onward Christian Soldiers', by the local composer Sabine Baring Gould. It was the first time I have ever seen someone raising their hands in worship to 'Onward Christian Soldiers'!!! - but to each their own.....
