This weekend the Bishop confirmed that I was a Saint and did have a Soul. Or something......
All Saints' Sunday, everyone resplendent in purple, was also the Confirmation service, of four young people and two adults. For the first time in 8 years, there was nobody from the Choir getting Confirmed. Heathen lot. The Bishop of Plymouth did the deed, despite an injured leg, and we sang lots of long saintly hymns, plus the anthem 'If ye love me' by Tallis - which we also sang at Evensong.
The morning organ voluntary was the eerily dramatic 'Incantation' by Langlais, and in the evening the cheery 'Tuba Tune' by Lang. Would they have worked better the other way around, I wonder?
All Souls' Eucharist, on Monday evening - another chance to dress the clergy in purple - was sung, but only just. 10 in the choir (2 sopranos - the others obviously do have a life outside church) and a scattered congregation. Judging by the length of the commemoration list, all the rest had died. We sang a refrain, 'receive their souls, receive their souls', in between each list of names - mixed opinion in the choir ranks as to whether that was too cheery a tune for the solemnity of the occasion, but you need a bit of zing to lighten a whole hour of solemnity - although we also went out on a high note of 'Jesus lives! thy terrors now can no more O death appal us', so ya boo sucks to doom and gloom :p
