Candlemas

Goody, I love services with candles. In the morning, the Parish Eucharist, with the Gospel Acclamations: Alleluia, This child is the light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel, Alleluia; and an excuse to sing any hymns containing references to Light, and Simeon and Anna; ending with the Candlemas Liturgy (from 'Promise of His Glory'). Anthem was 'Hear O my Lord' by Whitlock, the last word of which is 'light', surprisingly enough....

Evensong was a much quieter affair, no candles, but the Nunc Dimittis sung twice - once in the normal place, to Anglican Chant and once as the Anthem, to Noble in B Minor.

The organ voluntaries today were suitably festive, with 'Festal Flourish' by Jacob in the morning, and 'Festival Vountary' by Peeters, in the evening. Plus the first few bars of Happy Birthday during the Gospel Fanfare for one of the churchwardens. (Perhaps our organist is trying to get a mention in the Times or on the BBC Website in their features about secular tunes played by Church Organists.....) :D
