The gratings claimed another victim today. The procession came to an abrupt halt, with several choristers bumping into each other, as one of the sopranos got her shoe (and consequently her foot) stuck down one of the gratings in the aisle. Smooth action by churchwardens removed said grating, removed said shoe and the second half of the procession moved off again, only 10 yards behind the first. Worthy of a slickly timed pit stop change at Brands Hatch..... Another new choir member today, this time a young alto, but we managed to squeeze everyone into the choir pews. 'Christians shout for joy and gladness' by Bach sounded suitably robust.
Struggled to arrive on time for Evensong, having just completed a walk in aid of village hall funds, followed by a huge cream tea. The effect of the walk kicked in half way through the sermon, so it was difficult to concentrate and stay awake. No fault of the preacher today..... Choir numbers were quite low, but fortunately several beefy men, so 'The Strife is O'er' by Durrant, needing confident and positive male unison voices, plus 4-part Alleluias, sounded triumphant enough. Strangely enough, a hole in the floor has just appeared in front of my pew. After this morning, we quite expected another chorister to fall down it, but fortunately only a 1662 Prayer Book and a New Cathedral Chant Book succumbed. Old slate flagstones cannot 'just be replaced like that' apparently, so we shall have to be extra careful for a while....
