A tiring weekend

The Tavistock Sings! music festival weekend: a real treat to hear Nadia Myerscough's violin solo on the Saturday evening (Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor). How does she play with that speed and finesse?!

A busy day for us on the Sunday, with morning Eucharist (the new Family-friendly 1st Sun. of the month service - 'this is our story, this is our song'; and the 23rd Psalm, to Anglican chant, as an anthem - ooh we milked those 'feminine endings' for all they were worth......) And of course, the Tavistock Sings! Festival Evensong:

Introit by Shaw - Fanfare, Responses by Thomas Tomkins (which had proved a devil to rehearse, but we finally got there), Stanford in C for mag. and nunc. and O thou the Central Orb - Wood - as the Anthem. And, of course, lots more people in church than your average Sunday. We left on a high note (literally?) and should have left the weekend there, really.

But no, we had to come back for more on the (Bank Holiday) Monday, with an all-day workshop on Tomkins. Music was too hard, we were all too tired, too many people had an academic rather than practical interest in Early Music, and the festival fizzled out on a low note. I think I might give the Monday a miss next year, because the rest of the festival was brilliant. You live, you learn - you learn, you live.....
