I'm getting used to our family service liturgy now, so it doesn't seem so awkward (this is our story, this is our song) - in fact that phrase is rather suitable for a service a large part of which is sung. I hope the singing lulls the babies and calms the little ones, and keeps the older mischevious ones amused in between cooking up cheeky answers to the preacher's questions. The readings and prayers were read better by younger people today than by many of the adults, which provided food for thought. It's very sad if churches pass up this opportunity for using the gifts of the young.
Anthem: How beautiful upon the mountains - Stainer, sung lightly and quietly - with half the choir missing this was somewhat easier than usual to attain.
The same anthem repeated at evensong, no mean feat since attendance meant missing the end of the men's singles tennis final (such dedication!) And of course the organist decided he couldn't possibly pass up the opportunity to play something very loud and American for the voluntary, abandoning the Prelude and Air by Purcell which was originally intended. When vestry humour collides with the solemnity of the formal service, heaven and earth touch fingers for a while.....
