Baptism

The church was very full today, not least because the vicar's granddaughter was being baptised. She was determined to be the star of the show, following in the footsteps of actor relatives, and made her presence noisily felt. There was a rush to sign her up for the choir in six years time, before any Cathedral could stake its claim - like all the best public schools we like to give the impression that our choir waiting list is long ;)

Two choristers, having passed their probationary period, were awarded their surplices today, and a new treble sang his first service with us. Good to see new blood, as with recurrent illness and a valued soprano moving away from the area, there is a need to keep numbers constant. Our anthem was 'Jesu the very thought of thee' by Bairstow - the newly baptised baby was as quiet as a mouse throughout, and indeed for the rest of the service; we obviously have the knack (or the shock tactics.....)

In the afternoon we had a very pleasant garden party at the home of one of the altos, with sandwiches and a cream tea, in aid of the Melanesian Brotherhood. It stayed dry, despite the earlier bad weather, and the sun even managed to peek out from behind the clouds occasionally. Not quite Solomon Islands weather, but we exercised our imaginations :)
