A good excuse for lots of welly in the hymns today - ''Christ Triumphant ever reigning' (Guiting Power) and 'How shall I sing that majesty' (Coe Fen) have rapidly become church favourites. Any hymn with the word 'King' in the title or first line qualified for the service today. I think people who came to church not knowing which Sunday it was soon got the point.
The curate ended her sermon with a quote from 'The Servant King' worship song. I suppose if I attended a different sort of church, everyone would have started singing it. As it was there was silence before we launched into something suitably restrained and hymnlike.
It made a change for us to sing the anthem in the choirstalls this Sunday morning - we needed to be near the organ for 'King of Glory, King of Peace' (harmonised by Bach) as it was accompanied. The sopranos excelled themselves with a beautifully clear top A - unlike the one they offered at choirpractice. Obviously they were saving themselves for the occasion.... ;)
