It really was the Eucharist this morning, but I began to feel the ghostly fronds of long-forgotten Mattins weaving themselves around me, as we sang The Venite in the usual Psalm slot, and then Stanford's Jubilate in Bb as an anthem. We only needed part of the Te Deum or a jolly Benedicite to round it all off and it would have been just like the good old days.
When we sang the Jubilate again at Evensong, it was amusing to hear the vicar introduce it differently - this time it was announced as Psalm 100, so nobody could complain about getting a Mattins canticle at Evensong. Sometimes 1662 diehards can be an unforgiving lot.....
It was the turn of our youngest organist (aged 12) to play the voluntary: All' Ofertorio by Zipoli. Effective simplicity - I hope we hear a lot more from this young lad as the years go by.
