Icicles on our hymn books this morning - or it certainly felt like it. The service went quite well, considering the interregnum, the curate being away and the first day of a new choirmaster. He played safe and had us sing 'Eastern Monarchs, Sages Three' (Lang) in unison. Everyone pulled together and made the best of difficult circumstances, and thawed out over coffee afterwards.
The Archdeacon came to take evensong - he was very self-assured given that there were no home staff in attendance; I suppose he had a good memory of our normal proceedings from other occasional visits to us in the past. We arrived to find the choir vestry had been completely changed around, which to choir members who like order and eternal changelessness was rather a shock. However, we managed to pull ourselves together in time to sing, 'Listen sweet dove' (Ives), without major incident.
