Just to clarify the situation regarding wife's mother's house. The intention is to bring in a company to do the tidying up. I do not think that we (wife and I) could possibly tackle the job ourselves. Some time next week, wife's mother, the social worker, and somebody from the company will meet at wife's mother's house to discuss what needs to be done. Wife would have been there, but the appointment is in the morning, when wife is at work. This weekend, we'll be visiting wife's mother, hopefully to cheer her up. The phone company are going to send a letter, addressed to wife's mother at home, with her customer number, without which they will do nothing. Maybe things will work out, if there are going to be people visiting the house. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been much farther forward.

I'm feeling a bit better. Yesterday evening ended with a sort of ceilidh. Second born wanted to dance, so wife put on a CD of Scottish dance music. Not really dad's scene ... (in this context, I'm dad) ...
