No affiliation with the Scottish Tourist Board whatever ...

Or whatever it's called nowadays.

It all depends whereabouts on the west coast. If it's ice cream you're after, then it's probably the Clyde coast, but I'm disloyal enough (I was born in Glasgow) to suggest that the area isn't ideally suited to the requirements of a modern family holiday. People reckon that the Isle of Arran manages to encapsulate a variety of terrain within a small area.

But when people talk about the west coast of Scotland, they usually mean farther north. For example, the Isle of Skye (maybe that's not the website the STB would have directed you to). Or still farther north, where the scenery becomes quite tremendous (if the clouds lift long enough for you to see it), to Gairloch and Loch Ewe, and beyond.

More seriously, Scotland is still worth considering for a holiday. Most of the holidays I've been on have been within Scotland, and I'm not complaining.
