I must have been crazy, thinking that I could discipline myself to maintain this log at lunchtime. Maybe, as the novelty wears off, things will change.
Anyway, thanks are due to those who have been kind enough to comment on my shaky beginnings. And to enquire how it went at the dentist. Well, I remember thinking, as the chair tilted backwards, that it would be somewhat inconvenient if Jesus chose this moment to heal my tooth. The dentist would go ahead anyway. Then I thought, how lonely I felt, and wished there was a friend to hold my hand. Of course, there were two other people in the room - the dentist and his assistant - but to them I was a patient. So I comforted myself with the thought that God was with me. I did manage to smile weakly at the dentist's assistant later on, and she smiled back.
In fact, the whole thing went reasonably well. However, what used to be a bridge is now a cantilever, and only time will tell if it's strong enough. I was quite surprised, at the previous appointment, when the dentist was explaining what he intended to do, that he was talking the language of civil engineering, and I could just about hold my own in a conversation. (Many years ago, I studied engineering at a Scottish university, where every flavour of engineer studied together, so I picked up some idea of the basics of civil engineering, which was the primary discipline.)
Buying a new mobile phone turned out to be quite a struggle. But I am now the possessor of a purple Nokia 5210 (it should have been a tasteful light blue, but one of my colleagues already has one, and I thought that it would be important to be able to tell them apart.)
And the Open Day at firstborn's (I guess that it would be better not to use real names in a public place like this, so I shall refer to our two children as firstborn and secondborn - not original, there was a tv drama called "The Biederbecke Tapes" in which the couple's child was always referred to as firstborn) was fine. The teacher's comment as we arrived was along the lines of - thank goodness you've come - apparently firstborn had spent the whole day up until then asking when her daddy was going to appear. And they were reasonably careful about security, which was irksome, but quite understandable.
Enough - I'm supposed to start work at 09:15,
Chas
