Hope

To-day, I went back to the dentist. The receptionist kindly fitted me in with a short appointment. My mouth has been sore. The dentist made some adjustments to the temporary crown, which, hopefully, will help.

To-morrow, unless there is a last-minute reprieve, the buses will be on strike (which, of course, blows my cover, if I was seriously trying to conceal which Scottish University I work for). I cannot comment on the rights and wrongs of the drivers' case. It seems to me that the offer which is already on the table is generous (particularly compared with what we're being offered). But perhaps the drivers seriously want to get away from the situation where it is normal for them to work so many hours of overtime.

Laying aside the question of what we hope for when we die, what can we hope for now, and in the immediate future? Amazing things have happened. The Berlin Wall came down. South Africa is known as the rainbow nation. But there is still the threat of war. In Pakistan, the offices of a Christian charity were entered by gunmen, and people shot. I've just read a BBC news article suggesting that animals in the Arctic are dying because of the chemicals we use as fire retardants.

No wonder ostriches bury their heads in the sand!
