Registration at the Big Celebration was to start at 10:00, with the first session beginning at 10:45. I thought that it would be a good idea to aim to arrive there at 10:00, so that if we were running a little late, we would still have plenty of time. So, I suggested that we leave at 08:30, expecting a journey time of 90 minutes. In the event, we left the house after 10:00, not particularly happy with each other. Things might have gone more smoothly if I'd explained my thinking. I guess that the wife reckoned that every minute past our intended departure time meant so many minutes late at our destination.
It would have been better if we could have arrived with time to sort ourselves out before the programme started. As it happened, we joined the children's programme as a family, which was fun, but not terribly informative (although I appreciated the sense of humour of the gentleman who was arranging games for the children). We took our picnic lunch in the grounds, enjoying the hot sun, and managed to dispose ourselves a little more efficiently for the afternoon's activities. Granny joined us mid-afternoon.
The evening meal was simple, and enjoyable. The ceilidh which followed was more fun than I'd anticipated.
But, for me, this event was made difficult in much the same way as most church events turn out. My focus has to be on making sure that the whole family is catered for, with the result that I, personally, do not get the opportunity to participate as an adult in whatever is being offered.
