Son's finger was resting on the edge of the car as I closed the boot this morning. The result was a bruised finger (and a crying child). Perhaps it will have been a good thing, though. He has a habit of leaving his fingers in places they could be hurt when a door closes. Maybe now he'll understand that we have his best interests at heart when we warn him (he rushed away yesterday afternoon, saying "I'm not your friend", when I moved him away from the doorway).

But to what extent do you protect your children, and how much freedom do you give them? As I was closing the car boot this morning, I may have been distracted because I was angry at being told that if my daughter wants to make her own way to breakfast club I shall have to write a letter taking full responsibility. I am not a lawyer, and wouldn't even begin to know how to write such a letter, so, in future, I shall accompany her in the mornings to breakfast club. Just so long as she understands that it is not I who don't think that she is capable, but everybody else in the whole wide world. Our wonderful, godless society requires that our children be protected by their parents, or a legally-responsible adult, for every moment of their lives.

But maybe I'm the one who is out of step ...

[I was going to entitle this wiblog entry "Are we there yet?" Listening to opera on the radio has its advantages, being able to listen to the music without trying to find a way to sit comfortably in a theatre seat, but it can be difficult to know what is happening on stage.]
