Birthdays

Saturday was wife's birthday. The plan was to spend the day at East Links Family Park, but the weather was miserable. Suggested Dynamic Earth as a poor weather alternative (daughter liked the sound of a place which had a cafe), but there wasn't much enthusiasm. I was dragging my feet because we're at the end of our first month of trying to manage our finances with Microsoft Money, and I was trying to work out how to categorise our expenses to be flexible and useful.

After lunch, we went for a drive, visiting some East Lothian villages. I think that, in the event, wife enjoyed the outing, especially because at our first port of call there was a new housing estate, with a showhouse.

On Sunday, children had been invited to a birthday party at a soft-play centre, called Happy Castle. It was our first visit (the place is a few miles from where we live). It seemed pretty good, and I reckon that both of our children enjoyed themselves.

Maybe we've stumbled across a clue to the cause of son's sore feet. A few days ago, we had a night during which son complained of sore feet. Our GP has suggested that it could be cramp, but it can happen several times in the course of one night, and then not at all for weeks. I noticed yesterday evening a dimple (I would have called it a dent) at the base of his spine. Scanning through our medical dictionary, I came across a condition called spina bifida occulta, which can cause symptoms affecting the feet and lower limbs (although pain wasn't specifically mentioned). Of course, spina bifida sounds scary, but this particular condition is apparently fairly common.

Anyway, an appointment has been made for wife to take son to the doctor on Thursday.
