I'm in the middle of a book, called "Emotional Intelligence", which was recommended to me by a teacher at daughter's school (not a personal recommendation, but in the course of a presentation). The book argues that, in addition to the well-known IQ, which we have come to accept as the measure of a person's intellectual ability, we should be aware of something which we might call EQ (not sure what it stands for), which indicates how well a person is likely to perform in the emotional arena. To be fair, I think that the author recognises that an array of skills can be employed when dealing with emotional matters, and that a single score isn't going to give a helpful picture of an individual's strengths (or, as implied, weaknesses).

Mostly, the sources which the author uses are scientific. This is a modern, materialistic book. It gives, nevertheless, a powerful insight into aspects of being human. I am personally challenged by the descriptions of people who have difficulty communicating emotion. Much of what I experience tallies with the hypothesis that I am one of those. Maybe if I connected better emotionally with other people, I wouldn't be sitting here typing my thoughts into a wiblog.

Please forgive the introspection. I'll try not to do it too often.
