Happily (for us), the doctor was able to reassure us. He explained that (a) Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is an extreme form of hypermobility, and (b) son doesn't have it (on current evidence). Son does have some hypermobility, but it shouldn't cause a problem.
He has arranged for son to have his thumb straightened.
