It takes time to come back from a holiday. We returned from Whitby (courtesy of Arriva Northern, Virgin, and Scotrail) last week-end, arriving early Saturday evening. It's only this week-end that we are beginning to feel 'at home'.

At daughter's insistence, the paddling pool is out this afternoon. The weather is just about 'OK', considerably improved upon earlier in the week, when I was feeling sorry for people visiting Edinburgh. But, of course, people don't come to Edinburgh for the beautiful sunny weather - they come for the atmosphere, of which there was plenty.

Son is 4. I think that we want to try to help him to enjoy church. I think that we have to ask church people to be flexible. Strictly following the rules, he should be in creche, while his sister is in Sunday school (or Kidz Klub). He doesn't want to be left on his own with people he doesn't know. So, if he can attend Sunday school, we help him to 'turn a difficult corner'. If it means that I have to be in Sunday school as well, to look after him (he's, technically, too young for Sunday school), then maybe we can make that into a good thing. One thing. I have the utmost admiration for the lady who manages the Sunday school. I can understand why she might not be happy to see the rules being bent. But if we can help son through this time then 'good, not bad'.

While we were on holiday, I started taking time with son at bedtime, suggesting that we could 'talk to Jesus'. Son said, "If we talk to Jesus, will he come?"
