We had a 'do' this afternoon for a member of the team who has taken early retirement. It was nicely done, with some members of the team putting on a sketch entitled (if memory serves me right) "Advisory through the Ages". My (now ex-) colleague has worked for what used to be called Advisory, and is nowadays referred to as User Support, for much of his working life.
There was a significant moment, for me, when reference was made to the time when my present boss took over a team, of which I am now the only one still being managed by her. Maybe it's good, occasionally, to be reminded that there are longer timescales to consider than just getting through the day unscathed. The venue chosen for this afternoon's event happened to have, on the wall, a number of posters relating to the achievements of James Clerk Maxwell, after whom the building where we work is named. Somebody has said that 10,000 years from now, people will be saying that the most significant event of the 19th century was Maxwell's discovery of the laws governing electrodynamics. I have my doubts.
