Politics

A wee bit frustrated that so much of what we do is controlled by politics. It is a fact of university life that postgraduate students doing research are not that different from staff. The work that they do benefits the university (contributes to its aims, in jargon-speak), but the computing service, no doubt 'guided' by some committe somewhere insists on making a hard distinction between staff and non-staff (which includes not only students, but also visitng academics, and people who are working on research projects, but who happen to paid from some other source), so much time is wasted trying to make services available to people who need them (and whom the university needs to have access to these services), but whom the university has decided are not entitled to these services. And sometimes it just isn't possible.
