Mixed feelings

Yesterday, son said that he would come with us to church (provided he could dress up as Peter Pan). But by this morning he had changed his mind, so daughter and I went to church, wife staying behind with son. Our rector is trying to introduce some informality to the morning service, but in a manner which he describes as 'both ... and', which means that some services are more formal than others. It's like going to a fancy dress party, but not knowing whether the theme was 'the roaring twenties', or 'pirates on the high seas'.

I think that this was an informal service, but since we worked our way through the Scottish Liturgy, it may rather depend on your point of view. To me, it was pretty formal, but with a space in the middle when we sang a few modernish songs, accompanied by a group of instruments. This was, for me, the best part.

Sorry, I'm being a wee bit negative, because I'm not happy with just moments of feeling that God is present, amidst a time during which I mostly feel ... alien is the word which comes to mind, strangely. Still a stranger, after attending this church for more than three years. Yet when we arrived, we felt immediately that this was a warm, friendly congregation.

Of course, it could be me.
