Son, who is 5, asked me today 'what is the future?' (well, what he really asked was 'what are futures?'). The question was, I understand, prompted by something which happened in a Power Rangers story. But, having tried to explain, it occurred to me that things might be better if George Bush thought about the future sometimes. He seems to be concerned only with the present - for example, he considers his country's economy to be more important than climate change. And then it occurred to me that perhaps Tony Blair does have some kind of vision of the future, though I don't know what it is, and if I did know, I don't know if I would like it.
Perhaps being concerned about the future is a luxury. When the present feels like desperately treading water to stay afloat, then it's difficult to think about going anywhere.
