Instead of getting the bus/es home this evening, I shall set off in the wrong direction, into town. My purpose will be to visit John Lewis who, on previous evidence, are likely to stock items which our darling children have indicated that they would appreciate discovering wrapped up before them on Christmas Day.
And, by the way, what is an Advent Calendar? I seem to remember that an advent calendar climaxes on Christmas Eve, but the modern ones (which tend to feature small confectionery items instead of uplifting images) finish on Christmas Day. So they have no right to be called Advent Calendars. Perhaps Advent and Christmas Day Calendars?
More seriously; daughter has indicated that she would like a certain baby doll for Christmas. This doll, we have observed, comes in two colours - pink and brown. I have asked daughter which she would prefer, and she has elected to leave the decision to me. It seems to me that it would be a good idea to buy the brown one. It can only help, and in to-day's society anything we can do to eradicate the evil of racism must be worth doing.
I'm not being condescending, am I?
PS Maybe I shouldn't be admitting to this, but ... Adair Turner (now Lord Turner) used to live two doors along from us ... for a while we went to the same school, were probably in the same class ...
