Christmas is coming ... why are so many charities asking for an extra donation just now? Just when people are under the severest financial pressure. Perhaps the idea is that we are already overspending, and won't notice the additions so much. I appreciate that some charities have traditionally approached their supporters at this time of year - the Salvation Army comes to mind - but I get the impression that several others have jumped on to this particular bandwagon. Not to mention the new trend towards virtual presents.
'Tis also the time of year for Nativity plays - our church one happens to-morrow - daughter is to be a small person. Later in the week, she'll be Mary in her class play at her school.
