Well, we started with the material-fest. Unavoidable, really. For two children, Christmas is presents. And, happily, they were pleased with what they'd received.
Church @ 10 am. Not entirely civilized. We (well, to be honest, we were a few minutes late) ... The sermon was a challenge - the materials - an assortment of presents received - the result - a bit of a mishmash - but well done, our youth worker. Reality intruded - a drawing of how the appearance of the church will be affected by the installation of Vodafone's masts - not at all, it appears - the antennae will be inside the steeple. But, I believe that we have to take into consideration the fact that the people who live nearby don't want it. They believe that there is a health risk. If science tells them, however, that the wonderful diversity of nature came into being without the intervention of a supreme being, they will use that information to avoid believing in God. But if science says that there is no evidence for any effect on health because of mobile phone masts - they don't think that science has got it right.
Let's say that again. No evidence that the MMR causes autism. Well, maybe. No evidence that mobile phone masts affect health. Ah, but maybe they do! No evidence that God is involved in his creation. Ah, well, that proves that there isn't a God.
I don't know what to think. I don't want to give anyone an excuse to bad-mouth the church. I appreciate that, to a church which needs money to refurbish (in accordance with the requirements of the disability discrimination act), Vodafone wanting to place phone masts in the steeple looks like a get-out-of-jail-free card. I know, as the parent of young children, that any threat to the health of my children, however theoretical, is a threat to my family. It's the vestry's decision, not mine. But, maybe I should place a 'no' vote on the table.
Sorry, not very Christmassy. Wife (with a little help from Marks and Spencer) put a feast on the table. I do hope that you are all enjoying this special day. Happy birthday, Jesus!
