Words fail me

No, really. How can I do justice to last night's experience? A dragon came to Comrie, and breathed fire all around. The supporting act was good - Yvonne Lyon, one to watch, but then Martyn Joseph took the place by storm. I haven't felt so alive for a long time.

Highlights - when he got the audience to join in "This being woman", and we sounded good - then he abandoned the stage and walked through the audience singing a song I didn't know, so, unfortunately, couldn't join in with - when he invited the accordionist (from the supporting act) to do a solo in "Liberal Backslider" (we'd been told earlier that the accordion was banned from Martyn's stage). But it wasn't just the highlights - it was the way he kept going, and kept us going - the consistently high quality of his songs - and, on this occasion, undoubtedly, the intimacy of the venue. It was, as Martyn said, though these weren't exactly his words, an occasion which belongs to everyone who was there - I'm pretty sure that no-one left The White Church unchanged by the experience.

The week-end didn't quite work out as planned. Granny (henceforth to be known as Helena) had said that she might not be well enough to come to the gig. Then, just as Wife (henceforth, Tytania), Daughter (Hermia), and Son (Lysander) should have been preparing to leave to do their thing (leaving me to have lunch, and then set off for Helena's), Lysander said that he wanted to come with me. I couldn't think of a good reason why he shouldn't come (actually, there was a good reason - while I was at the concert, he would need to be looked after by Helena, who, as I've said, wasn't feeling well); actually, I rather welcomed the idea, and it would make things easier for Tytania (is this working? - I didn't think that giving people generic titles was terribly creative, and one of my other blogs has an operatic context - so I came up with a new set of names - can you guess the opera? - probably better known as a play). So, I (Oberon) and Lysander set off, and arrived at Helena's in good time.

I felt a bit bad, leaving Lysander with Helena, but I think that he would have been a bit overwhelmed if he'd come to the gig. We've had a good week-end, memorable in many ways. But I'm glad now to be back home; not quite so glad to be back at work to-morrow.
