The good news

I drove to work to-day, and the rear left tyre seems to be OK. I'm guessing that the hissing sound we heard might have been caused by water splashed on the exhaust pipe.

The not-so-good news is that Son is still off school; indeed when I checked a couple of hours ago, he still had a temperature, so probably isn't going to school to-morrow. It creates all sorts of problems when Son is off school, because Wife and I both work, and need to take time off to watch him if he's ill. It's always seemed to me to be an unanswered question at the heart of the present assumption that both parents work - what happens if a child is sick? My own employer is good, allowing me 10 days in a year of family support leave. Wife, in theory, works for the same employer, but only gets family support leave under special circumstances (not to look after a child suffering from a viral infection, it appears). I can only assume that her managers (she works in the School of Education, so these are the people who are training the school teachers of the future) believe that if a child is ill, the child should simply attend school anyway.

Frustrating. It's difficult to get work done under these circumstances. I myself am feeling better these days. I think that I must have had a virus (probably the same one as Son) which was affecting my breathing, and causing the discomfort in my chest.
