Thinking benches

I've been reminded a couple of times this week-end of TractorGirl's thinking bench. The place where we stayed had a guest lounge, which was at the front of the house, and which had a window looking out on the Firth of Forth. Two (comfy) chairs were positioned so that you could just sit and look out. So I sat there, and thought, as darkness descended, and I saw some lights along the Fife coast. And to-day, we walked along the coast by Dunbar, and as I rounded a corner I suddenly saw a bench, which faced out to sea, and was sheltered, and I wished that I'd brought my camera.

I did have my camera yesterday afternoon, when there was quite a sea, though, thankfully, the weather was mild:

To-day was a momentous day in Scotland. It is now illegal to smoke in a pub, hotel, or restaurant, or knowingly to allow someone to smoke in a pub, hotel, or restaurant. But yesterday evening, Beloved and I struggled to find a restaurant in North Berwick with even a non-smoking area. There was one no-smoking restaurant, which, unfortunately, had been fully booked. In the event we found a table in a restaurant which allowed smoking, but, probably because it was spacious and the tables weren't too close together, and there was a log fire providing some ventilation, it wasn't too much of a problem. Indeed, the meal was wonderful. And I derived a certain pleasure from watching the dinosaurs puffing away, and thinking - you won't be allowed to do that to-morrow.
