At about 1/4 past 10 this morning, I received a telephone call from a peeved colleague who enquired if I was on duty this morning. Of course, I should have been, but somehow hadn't noticed the item in my calendar.
On the whole, I survived the day. I am determined not to become as stressed as I was last year - if that means that some things which people expect me to do don't get done - then OK.
As ever, it is difficult to find the balance between (as the pundits put it) urgency and importance. Wife tells me that her boss has given her a big job to do, but that he recognises that this means that she won't have time for other jobs. What tends to happen to us is that we get asked to do the big jobs, but somehow we have to do all the other jobs as well.
While there are urgent tasks to be done, then it doesn't really matter how important the other tasks are, they won't get done.
