Persephone observes that for many of us in many situations, the internet has become a primary means of communication. My comment regarding the internet in the 80s refers to a time when the world wide web was, to me at anyrate, unknown, but there were things called newsgroups. They were bulletin boards, I suppose. There was even a rather clever equivalent to match.com. You could post a personal advert anonymously, and someone could reply anonymously, to you individually.

Those were my single days, and I did once put my head above the parapet, and received a reply. We did correspond for a while, and I did learn the identity of the lady I was emailing. Sadly, I impatiently emailed that I wished she would email more often, and she pointed out that we were too far apart (geographically) for the relationship to go anywhere. I guess that she was right, although within a few weeks I was invited to attend a conference in the city where she lived.

Some memories can still evoke wistfulness ...
