Is it a sign of assertiveness, or cussedness? At his first clarinet lesson of the new term, our son announced to his teacher that he wouldn't be continuing, because he didn't have time to practise. She emailed his mother, who phoned me. After a tense weekend, son agreed to carry on, at least until he had sat his Grade 1 exam.

Then, wife told me that son didn't want to go to Scout camp, which is next weekend. This evening, he didn't want to go to the music and drama thing that he and his sister take part in (he offered what sounded like more commitment to the clarinet, if he could be allowed to abandon this evening's activity). Wife thinks that this evening's protest was a spur of the moment thing, because he could have been out playing football.

I don't know. I find social events and activities difficult. And, although I persevered with the piano, it's never been natural for me. The timing of these announcements has been particularly unfortunate, but perhaps he doesn't know how to voice his concerns, until the thing is imminent, and he feels that he has to ...
