Just back from a week at Abbot Hall. Abbot Hall is one of a chain of hotels run by the Methodist Guild - so, once a year, we become Methodists. (On Sunday, I was back home, and at church with my daughter, and there was a baptism (three, actually), and as I took part in the familiar service, I remembered that our children are (technically) Anglicans - because when they were born we were attending a Scottish Episcopal church.)

We had prayers, morning and evening. Our speaker was a sheep farmer, and had chosen Psalm 23 to talk about. His stories, drawn from his experience as a farmer, were especially illuminating. But it's hard, back in the secular world, to hold on to these assurances. I don't feel the presence of a guiding shepherd, these days ...
