Why did he have to apologise

In the first place, what he said to his immediate colleagues, under stress, is not the business of the media. But the irony is that, at that point, he earned my vote - perhaps partly out of sympathy, because there seemed to be unfair reporting - partly because at that moment he was revealed as a real person.

And then he lost it. Maybe he regained her vote, but how many did he lose? To be honest, I don't like the word 'bigot'. So often, it seems to mean 'someone who holds strong views which I happen to disagree with'. But I think that we know what he meant, and that perhaps, in context, it was fair comment.

I feel that the apology was fake - the smile with which he greeted reporters as he emerged from her house was forced - the waters have been muddied again (interesting that he called himself a 'penitent sinner' - echoes of the manse he grew up in, perhaps).

He still has my sympathy. I'm still not sure who has my vote ...
