For many years, now, I have relied upon Scripture Union's Encounter with God series to supply me with, each day, a passage from the bible to read, along with thoughtful accompanying notes. One of Encounter with God's strengths (for me) is that the approach taken is to read through sections of the bible, taken both from the Old and New Testaments. As Good Friday approaches, unsurprisingly, we read the story of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, at a pace which allows each day's reading to be manageable. This morning, I read, from Mark's gospel, about Jesus' betrayal and subsequent trial.

This Lent, I have, additionally, been enjoying Maggi Dawn's "Giving it up". Maggi brings warm humanity to what she writes about the passages she's chosen. I'm going through a difficult time, especially at work, and have appreciated a fresh way of thinking about some familiar stories. Appropriately, through Holy Week, Maggi has chosen passages which depict events at roughly the tempo they will have occurred during that dramatic week in and around Jerusalem.

I feel as though I'm listening to a symphony where the composer has arranged for two themes, at differing speeds, to play together, hopefully to reach a climax together. I just wish that I felt better about my life as I read, but perhaps that is the point ...
