Now feeling just a bit silly

My first attempt at a degree took place at an ancient university now celebrating a significant birthday. This morning, I was excited to find in my pigeonhole a communication from the college which I belonged to. I was also somewhat bemused, since it is over 30 years since I had any contact with this college. How did they track me down?

It was only as I composed an email in response that I noticed that they had my middle initial wrong. I mentioned this to the colleague with whom I share an office, at the same time basking in perhaps undeserved reflected glory. I wonder if he was sceptical, because he did some research, and found that there is someone who works in the same building as us, who has the correct middle initial, and who was an undergraduate at this particular college.

I then realised that the address wasn't terribly specific, and that the communication was undoubtedly meant for this other person. Hurriedly, I resealed the package, and took it to the enquiries office of this person's school. I've followed up my email, recalling my link with the college, and am still hopeful that they will welcome me as a long lost member. But I'm also feeling terribly embarrassed ...
