This time I wanted to go into the city centre after work. And, until my current one ticket runs out, it makes financial sense to use it. And it isn't black and white. The 'community' of people who drive to work is less attractive than the community of people who take the bus. How do I know? I don't, of course. The drivers may well be nice people who when stuck behind a steering wheel suddenly become selfish and competitive (often enough for the drive sometimes to be frightening). And time spent in buses can be valuable - one can read, one can listen to music, one can vegetate.
Unfortunately, in my case, park and ride isn't an option. It's complicated, but because where I work is on the edge of town, to the south, and where I live is out of town, to the south east, none of the various park and ride locations which have sprung up confers any significant advantage. And the bus journey is a dog leg (of two or three shorter trips), which is frustrating.
I'm not convinced that the time gained by taking the car would be quality time.
