he's a great writer as well as being ludicrousy prolific. as sweeping and hideously inaccurate as generalisations can be, I would have to say that he is great at pointing out the problems but a little too often I am just left thinking 'oh, dear' and being a bit more world-weary than I'd like. Still, I keep reading the stuff cos it always rings bells with me.

the point of this though was that not previously having had the time or inclination to seek out his latest, I disocvered today that the title of his latest book is 'wasted lives'. He used to call them things like 'community' and 'the individualised society', 'in search of politics' - and stuff which was, while still pointing out lacks and absences, more generally applicable. Now his last one before 'wasted lives' was 'liquid love: on the frailty of human bonds'. It's got much more depressing on an individual level, I reckon. At least the titles have. I think maybe he needs a nice cup of tea and a holiday.
