Today I had to finally admit to myself and the nice people at driver licensing that I have moved. This involved complex meanderings to the Post Office including the filling out of forms, the paying of £4 and the hideous necessity of passport photographs. Also it involved handing over my paper licence.
I passed in 1990, and last moved in 1998. This means that I have successfully managed to hold this document for 14 consecutive years without once losing it (although it did get replaced with a new address one in 1998 obviously). A huge achievement; I can never, ever find my MOT for the tax and invariably pay a tenner for a replacement.
Have to say that apart from the awful prospect of having another card with my photo on (I hate them with considerable passion) I was quite sad to part with my old paper licence. I don't know why this is; finally admitting I don't really live in my old house any more, the fact that I've had it for 6 years, the fact that I quite like having something that's quite dated but still legal (unless, of course, you've moved). It's good they dont' give it back to you actually or I'd never be able to let it go.
The Life Laundry lady would have a field day with me.
