Thanks everyone for your comments! I told my boss today (one of them - the other is on holiday) and he was lovely about it. It has been incredibly hard work not telling any colleagues - and odd now as I am currently working out of the office (been seconded to a uni research centre at my request because I heard about an opportunity - my employers got nothing out of it at all but are simply great and just let me do it cos I wanted to). Have told one colleague who was very pleased for me so hope they are all as enthusiastic. A few people have left recently and I don't want it to look like I've just found a way to 'get out', in fact I will be sad to leave although I certainly can't wait to get going on the phd and be a student again. Magic.
