the perils of ever moving anything

the other day i tried to put my pc back together to check the broadband still works. Unfortunately the computer didn't work - made a very loud whirring sound - possibly a response to being ignored and stuck in a corner for 6 weeks while the building work happened (the building work that was supposed to take 10 days. i really need to work through my issues with that ;-) ).

*alert* this paragraph is only vaguely interesting to even me, but having written it down i understand it better, so i'll just keep it in so that when i email the good people at ntl i will have half a clue what the problems are - i recommend you skip it yourself */alert*
i have two broadband accounts. one in the house i left last september - I really should have cancelled that as they used it till i took my computer away in Jan but as far as I know we don't really know where the original cdrom is so nobody else can install it on thiers; however, when i signed up to it in my new house my pc just kept right on receiving from the old email address so i kept right on using it. when my old pc refused to function i thought it would be smart to install the broadband stuff on my new laptop but that didn't work, so now i'm pretty much confused and entirely unable to access anything. well, the hotmail account keeps on trucking, bless it.

Anyway now I need to (a) get the pc fixed, really, but where do you start - it's like choosing builders, and you DON'T want to get me started on that now do you, and (b) get in touch with NTL to work out a way forward on accessing my emails... i'm not loving my chances of ever seeing them again.

Other things I might have lost - my little envelope of important driving stuff, like my new license, my insurance and MOT certificates and the car registration. All that being in one place is really smart, although it would be a whole stack smarter if i had any clue about where that place was.
