Recently I was browsing around the local Christian book shop and was drawn to the fiction section...well I hadn't read a novel since the Da Vinci Code last year, and you know.... winter's here... I had a desire to spend the weekend lazing around with the fire going... escaping.. getting lost in a really good read... mmmm
I saw a best-seller called monster by Frank Peretti and, remembering I really enjoyed his This Present Darkness about 20 years ago, I bought the book and hurried home, stoked the fire, put the coffee pot on and settled down.
Well, I was so disappointed by the authors latest effort, there is nothing good I can say about it.
It was about an American couple going camping and the wife being kidnapped by a yeti and then this other genetically engineered monster wandering around killing everything and really no... story.
As a Christian fiction author Peretti did nothing to make me think about anything.
The kidnapped wife prayed but it lacked credibility as she spent most of the story carried in the arms of the yeti and there was an unconvincing point about not messing with creation.. but really, the only reason I finished the book was that I kept hoping it would get better.
I remember that after I read This Present Darkness, I was really convicted to pray. Monster has only convinced me to never read another Peretti novel.
Dan Brown's much criticised book meant a lot more to me I'm afraid
