Our Tune

Been meaning to write about this for ages, and forgetting.

Among the presents given to us when Ginger was born was a rather lovely musical rabbit. It's very good quality and well made; when you pull the wooden ring it plays a 'go to sleep' type tune.

I was wondering why it made me feel vaguely uncomfortable and have finally twigged that the tune it plays is the theme from Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, better known as the background music to Simon Bates' 'Our Tune'. Which means that every time I play the music after a night feed if Ginger needs to get back to sleep, I go back to bed feeling vaguely that the tragic tale of my life is about to be told by a cheesy DJ, followed by a song which is supposed to sum the whole thing up. Not sure what my 'our tune' would be though - any suggestions?

For non-UK/horribly young readers, 'Our Tune' was a long-running feature on a radio 1 show hosted by Simon Bates, where he would read out someone's tragic tale (usually starting with boy meets girl and ending with untimely death)* followed by 'their tune'. It was all horribly mawkish, but serious. Neice 1 tells me that Scott Mills now has an 'Our Tune' feature on his show, which I strongly suspect is a parody, although I've not heard it.

Worryingly, I think the person who gave us the rabbit is actually too young to remember 'Our Tune' , which makes me feel terribly old.

*Which is suppose makes the theme from R&J the perfect choice. Although if you know it from Our Tune before seeing the film it renders the balcony scene utterly hilarious.
