I have a new kitchen gadget.

Electronic gadgets pretty much leave me cold, but a device for peeling, coring and slicing apples by turning a handle? I'm there.

Last year our Bramley tree produced a ridiculously huge crop and is set to do so again this year. Last year I spent every Groover-nap for about a fortnight preparing apples to stew and freeze, it was excessively tiresome.

On Monday, Groover was in charge of operating the machine, and did 23 apples in the space of about three quarters of an hour. He loved it, and it was brilliant to have him actually helping me, rather than doing little things which I call 'helping' but which actually make the whole process of whatever I'm doing much longer.

I also have a queue of people waiting to borrow it, so I am feeling quite popular.

In other horticultural news, we have eaten six courgettes from our plant, which is still going strong. All the potatoes are eaten; the potato barrel didn't crop as well as I'd hoped but I think I know why and can do it differently next year - the spuds we did have from it were delicious. We've also had peas, and everything else is coming on very nicely. Not bad for a first attempt.
