I bought this book for myself (and a couple of other people) for Christmas and finally got around to making something from it this week. Jane Brocket's previous book The Gentle Art of Domesticity resides in my kitchen (slightly sticky on the rock bun page), as although it is not technically a recipe book, the recipes she did include all worked for me straight away, with no tweaking, which makes me suspect that here is a woman who bakes in the same way I do - or at least likes her flapjacks with the same level of chewiness I do.
I'm happy to report that the currant bun recipe in the new book worked similarly well, and 12 currant buns have been devoured this week by just mr birdie and me, which is highly greedy of us. I was particularly pleased with this as although I can make bread with my eyes closed, any sort of sweet yeasty dough type thing always seems to go horribly wrong for me. Until this week, anyway.
So. So far, this book highly recommended. Next up, fruit cake I think.
