aaaaaaaaaaaaah why do people do this?

I just had an email from someone I don't know particularly well. It was one of those this is outrageous and disgusting! I'm sending you this because I know you'll agree with me! Sign the petition below to have it stopped, and if you're the 500th person forward it to..!

I am in a quandary. I have no wish to add my name to the list of frothers-at-the-mouth at the bottom of the e-mail. (And has such an internet petition ever in the history of the world been successful?) My fingers are itching to send off a reply telling the sender that I'm not going to add my name, and why, in no uncertain terms. But I don't know them that well, and I don't know how they'd take it, maybe as me having a go at them. But if I don't say anything, they'll think I agree and maybe that I have signed the awful thing.

Worse still, Snopes has failed me. My usual course of action with this sort of thing is a brief reply saying 'sorry, it's a hoax' or something of that kind, and a link to Snopes. But it's not on there. (Not that this one is a hoax, it's a very out of date rant about Jon Venables and Robert Thompson being released from prison.)
