Blatant Showing Off 5: Silk Painting

Now, this is a bit awkward. Silk painting is one of my favourite crafty activities (note to self: so why haven't you done any for ages?). However it tends to be that I paint scarves for particular people for presents or whathaveyou, and give them away, so I don't have much to show you.

I first encountered silk painting when I was doing a-level art. My friend L and I were frustrated that we weren't learning much about new techniques etc (our teacher had a really rough two years and wasn't around a lot - as we were sixth form we tended to be left to get on with it ourselves rather than having teaching cover) so we did some night classes and courses in the holidays and things. One of the ones we did was textiles - but painting and printing on fabric rather than making things out of it - and I got into silk painting then.

Anyway - here are some scarves. You can see a progression in the designs of these:

This one is kind of okay-ish. Not thrilled with some of the colours, and the yellow is too bright, but I really like the way the patterns in the centre came out, and they developed into this one:

Where the spirally patterns have become roses. The yellow is still too bright, and I don't know what I was thinking of with the blue and green border and centre.
Anyway, then someone asked me to make a scarf for her to give as a gift to a friend. I used the roses again, but scattered them more over the scarf, and didn't bother with a border. The background was a creamy colour rather than the yellow. Sadly I didn't take a photo of the finished scarf (I think it was a bit of a rush) and only have the design to show you:

Even with just a charcoal design on paper I think you can see it was better than the other ones. This is the story of my life - the only ones I've still got are the ones I'm not happy with!

(Although I do have a little project emerging in my head for when I finish the quilt. And the sock dogs. And...)
