Quilt finished before arrival of baby (as far as I know). Go me. I know I showed you this quilt ages ago, after I'd done the top, but it got put away with no edging or backing as it was ages till baby was due, and then a couple of weeks ago I had a 'eek, baby is due in a week' moment and got going on it again. I'm just waiting for S to pop, to find out baby's name so I can do a name patch for the back.
I may be odd here, but I love making bias binding myself. (Actually a list of things I totally irrationally prefer to do the hard way is probably a whole post of its own). The most obvious reason to make it yourself is that you can use fabric of your choice, so you have a perfect match with one of your patching fabrics. I just like doing it though. Every time I do, I follow the instructions thinking 'this is so wierd. this will never work', and then cut around the tube, which seems such an unlikely shape, and then you make the last snip at the end and hurrah! perfect bias binding. It's brilliant. Making it out of gingham like it is here leads to your eyes going very googly but means you have a line to follow so it came out really neat. I'm very pleased with the whole thing.
When I posted about it before I mentioned how somehow although I was really careful with cutting out and seam allowances, some of the seams still came out uneven. People posted helpful comments about using a proper rotary cutter, and aligning the edge of the fabric with the foot on the machine. I did all that - without a rotary cutter I don't think I'd ever do patchwork again, I loathe the cutting out bit so much - but for some reason there was still unevenness. I think it's probably just me.
In other crafty news, this morning I bought this book for mr b to give me for christmas. Having browsed a multitude of crochet books recently, this was the one I understood. And it has the best patterns. I'm having it for Christmas because if I have it now, I will descend into a spiral of experimental crochet and none of the stuff I have to make for Christmas will get done.
